Best Seafood Spot

1. La Case du Pêcheur

This place is not to be missed during your visit to Mauritius. It’s a location with a rustic and unique charm and it offers an amazing gaze upon the horizon.

Location: Route Royale, Bambous Virieux, Île Maurice

I had the pleasure of visiting this gem with my family, and despite their halal meat options, we decided to embrace the essence of the place by indulging in their exquisite seafood offerings. Being named “The Fisherman’s Cottage,” it was only fitting.

My chosen dish was an irresistible plate of shrimp curry elegantly accompanied by fragrant rice and lentils. To say the shrimps were generously sized might be an understatement; they were more like crustacean titans, unlike any shrimp I had encountered.

Our time there was more than just a meal; it was a delightful family bonding experience. If your travels take you to Ile aux Cerfs or the captivating East part of the island, I wholeheartedly recommend this restaurant.

2. Le Capitaine Grand Baie

Location: B13 Royal Rd, Grand Baie, Mauritius

This restaurant is one of the oldest and most famous seafood restaurants in Grand Bay offering a sensual seafood experience where freshness always prevails. I have not been to this one but some of my Mauritian friends recommended me.

3. Amigo Seafood Restaurant / Restaurant Reve d’R

Innovative seafood coupled with 38 years of existence; expect nothing less than a full-blown culinary experience when you take a seat at Amigo restaurant. My family has been there quite a few times and they had an incredible experience.

1. Sitar Indian Restaurant

Location: Bagatelle Mall or Tamarin

During my recent trip to Mauritius, I found myself drawn back to Sitar for the third time. Stepping into the restaurant was like crossing a threshold into a different world, where an orchestra of aromas immediately enveloped me in anticipation of the culinary journey ahead.

For those unaccustomed to fiery spices, I recommend opting for milder or non-spicy dishes to fully savor the experience. The menu caters to a spectrum of palates, ensuring everyone finds their perfect match amidst the diverse selection of flavors.

2. Happy Rajah

Location: Route Royale B11, Grand Baie, or Phoenix Mall

Nestled within an inviting and intimate space, this restaurant exudes coziness that sets the stage for an unforgettable culinary journey. Prepare to be swept away by a symphony of exquisite Indian flavors that await you.

Local Cuisines

Mauritius’ local cuisine is a captivating tapestry of flavors that mirrors the island’s diverse cultural heritage. Influenced by Indian, African, Chinese, and European traditions, Mauritian dishes seamlessly blend spices, techniques, and ingredients to create a harmonious symphony on the palate.

1. Best Dholl Puri and Roti

Where else to start but with the renowned Dholl Puri? Without a doubt, it stands as Mauritius’ most cherished street food. Those who’ve had the pleasure of visiting Mauritius are familiar with the picturesque scenes of patient crowds lining up along the streets, eager to savor the delicate, paper-thin delights crafted by the masterful hands of the finest street vendors.

The best dholl puri that I’ve tasted are from:

  • Chapo La Paille, located near Gare du Nord in Port-Louis
  • Beret at La Rue Desforges in Port-Louis
  • Bella Farata in Plaine Verte where I went almost every day during my trip
  • There is also Chez Bye which is also well-known on the island. They have been operating for more than forty years and it is located in Beau Bassin.

2. Best Boulette

Boulette, a delectable Chinese delicacy, has undergone a captivating reinvention and adaptation on the vibrant island of Mauritius. This year I had the pleasure to taste the best one at Kayam Boulette located in Camp Yoloff Port-Louis. They have a variety of boulettes.

Nestled in Grand Bay, there’s another culinary gem awaiting discovery — Ti Kouloir. This establishment has carved a name for itself on the island, garnering a reputation that precedes it. Although highly recommended by friends, my own schedule didn’t permit the pleasure of indulging there. If you’ve had the delight of savoring their offerings, I’d be thrilled to hear your thoughts in the comments section. Your recommendation could just be the nudge others need to embark on a flavorful journey at Ti Kouloir.

Jim Snack comes with its own chorus of recommendations, and I was not exempt from this chorus. Nestled conveniently close to the MRA buildings in Port-Louis, it beckons with the promise of culinary satisfaction.

3. Best Mine Bouille

“Mine Bouille,” a flavorful Chinese dish, has undergone a captivating readaptation on the island. Here are some of the best one that I’ve tried:

  • Lang Zuh (not sure of the spelling), is a culinary haven situated opposite Jeetoo Hospital in Port-Louis. If you’re seeking a recommendation, I wholeheartedly suggest trying their dry noodles. The unique charm of this place lies in the fact that the proprietor crafts his very own noodles right before your eyes, adding a touch of spectacle to the savory delight.
  • Ti Tonton Snack in Port-Louis
  • Ti Kouloir

In every bite of a Mauritian delight, an entire cultural tapestry unfurls – a story woven through centuries of history, migration, and fusion. From the fiery curries that evoke distant shores to the delicate seafood that pays homage to azure waters, each dish is a chapter in the island’s culinary narrative. As you explore the vibrant markets, savour the street food, and indulge in the island’s diverse cuisines, you embark on a journey that transcends mere sustenance.

It’s an immersion into the heart and soul of Mauritius itself, where flavours sing, textures dance, and traditions thrive. In this captivating culinary landscape, where Indian, Chinese, African, and European influences harmonise, you experience more than food – you experience the very essence of a vibrant nation, its past, its present, and its boundless creativity.

As you reflect on the gastronomic treasures discovered, may you also carry with you the vibrant spirit of Mauritius and the warmth of its people, a reminder that in every shared meal, the world becomes a little smaller, and humanity a little closer.
